Let's See...

Wednesday, September 9th - Went to practice at Brack, but knew I wouldn't be there a long time. The weather was looking bad and the coach was worried about lightning. We just went up to St. Mary's and back. Was not too disappointed. I really wanted to go home. I just started working the after school program. The three additional hours to the work day wipes me out.

Saturday, September 12th - Got up at 4am to make it to the HEB on Basse by 530 for a safety meeting. Some of the TEAM will be asking for donations at busy intersections of town in the next few weeks. We received some important safety information, a stylish orange vest, and a sign. I am all set. :0) The amazing thing about this past Saturday is that it was pouring down and we were still there standing in the rain with our umbrellas. (I need to buy a light rain jacket. )Anyway the TEAM meeting started about 6am and the rain dropped to a drizzle. (Thank God) We took off about 630am. I walked with Roni and we did pretty good. We averaged 4 miles per hour. Then we turned around at Trinity and I kind of slowed down and once again Roni got a burst of energy and took off. Rhonda, Marissa and Jennifer walked/ran with us in different sections of the last 8 miles. Marissa was with me when my feet gave out. I guess it was around 12 that I started to feel tired. Around 13 my feet were barely moving. They felt numb, warm and instead of shoes I felt like I had cardboard strapped to my feet. I couldn't wait to get to the last water stop at 14 miles. I wanted to go on, to just push through. However, my feet had other ideas. I waited at the water stop with the coaches and Elena to see if I would feel better, but I didn't. When Rhonda asked if I wanted to stop. I had the biggest lump in my throat and felt like I was about to cry. I really wanted to finish, but I needed to stop. She said it was better to stop than to injure myself so close to the marathon. Roni finished YAY! Let's see what happens in New Braunfels this weekend the mileage is 18.

Sunday, September 13th - Went to the Sam's Club at 410 and Summit with Tom. We did well. Made about $500. Highlights of the day. Ms. Awesome who quickly gave a $20 donation. Andrew the cute cart boy working at Sam's who lost his wallet. Little boy who tried to take Tom's medals, threw a bottle cap at me and a dirty used cigarette at Tom. Oh yeah and he was mocking us in Spanish. Pretty eventful.

Blog Slacker

Okay, the last time I posted was August 9th. What a slacker, BUT I have been busy with going back to work. It's hard having 6 weeks off and then having to get back into the swing of things. Oh yeah, and I was also teaming for an ACTS retreat with SJB. I swear if I am not doing a million things at one time, I feel like I am a slacker. It has always been my problem. I try to tackle too many things at one time. Anywho, here we go.

August 12th - Didn't make it to mid week practice, because I was trying to prepare for the weekend retreat. I had to get the dogs ready, clean the house, and pack.

August 15th - Didn't make it to Saturday practice, because I was on retreat. My intention was to try to go to practice and make it back to the Grotto by breakfast, BUT I remembered how I felt after walking 10 miles and I knew I would be wiped out the whole day. (Which is not a good idea for a retreat - especially on Saturday.) The retreat was difficult and eye opening at the same time. The good thing is that the retreatants had a great experience, despite the behind the scenes problems and really that is all that counts.

August 19th - Once again didn't make it to mid week practice. I had a fundraiser at Chili's the whole day. Thanks to Chili's South Park Mall, Manager Dan Vertiz. Chili's is one of those fundraisers where you are lucky to make $50. Basically you make up this flyer, people come out and eat, they give the flyer to the waitress with their bill, and the fundraiser gets 10% of the receipt. Well, I made over $260. AWESOME. What was really awesome is that so many people from school and around the district showed up. I had about 20-30 people from my campus support me. Then Coach Serna's husband (Reggie), who is a coach from the high school brought at least 15-20 people with him. (Great Guy!!) The librarian from Benavidez (Melanie) brought about 10 people with her. You have no clue how much it means to me when you'll come out to my events. It's just amazing. Well, after work I went with the Springharts for dinner and drinks and quietly passed out flyers to people finishing up their dinner. After dinner I stuck around because some of my friends from elementary/middle school showed up. It seemed like I was at Chili's the whole day. LOL

August 22nd - Finally made it back to La Cantera for practice. I had eaten so much crap this whole week that I knew today was going to be rough. (Hold on let me explain - teacher inservice week = going out to eat EVERYDAY!!!! It is a treat for us to be able to eat out and not have to eat in 20 minutes so we tend to go overboard LOL) I tried to eat chicken or not eat bread or cut back somewhere during lunch time, but it took it's toll and I could feel it on Saturday. I decided that I was going to do half the mileage. I turned around at 3 miles with Angela. Angela is a runner and she hurt her knee. She shouldn't have been out there and we were all getting after her. She has amazing determination and was still out there as hurt as she was. (Sidebar note- I havent' seen her, so I hope she is okay and just resting these few weeks.) Well, as I turn around I see Ashlee one of the mentors. She looks at me with a surprised look and says "Why are you turning around? Get over here and walk the full with me, I'm sweeping today." So, I turned around again. I walked with her and a couple of other girls. The full milage was supposed to be 12 miles, but we didn't go all the way. So we did almost10 miles.

August 24th - Started working out with the girls at work. Always have a good time (yes, we gossip).

August 25th - DJM = AH Had a bad day. But extremely thankful that this chapter in my life is finally closed for good.

August 26th - Almost positive that I didn't make it to practice, but I have no idea why. At first I thought it was because I went to see Jr in the hospital, but that was Friday. Jr is amazing. He is trying new medicine to destroy this horrible stomach cancer.

August 29th - Last practice at La Cantera. Thank God!!! The hills are killer. I think that is why I have been having trouble with my calf and hamsting feeling pulled. It is only on my right leg. Go figure. We were scheduled to complete the half marathon today, 13.1. I had eaten better this week, gone to the gym quite a bit and prayed alot. :0) I was feeling pretty confident that I would finish. I had gotten to mile 9 and was feeling the tightness on my right leg, I told the coaches and they kept asking if I wanted to quit. Stubborn as I am, I didn't. Coach Marissa cracks me up. She told me she was going to follow me in her car and she would take me back when I was ready. I kept walking and every half mile she would pop up. "Hi, it's me again. Are you ready to go back." I kept declining When I finally knew I wanted to stop, no Marissa. I finally made it to the last water stop (Mile 11), and my pace had dropped down to a stroll. Amanda at the water stop, took me back to the parking lot. Feeling pretty frustrated and disappointed that I didn't finish. She told me don't worry 11 is great. I later found out that Coach Jennifer was about to come out and finish the 13.1 with me. I probably could have pushed thru had she been there. Rhonda, Marissa, and Jennifer are amazing coaches and women. They are so supportive and make practice endurable, especially at those moments when you think you can't go one more step.

Sidebar Note- Spent the afternoon celebrating my Dad's 70th birthday with my sister Rachel her husband and the boys. Dad wanted 70 candles, so we lit the bonfire around 5:00.

August 30th - Signed up for a Sam's club date with Tom (mentor/runner). Our goal was to ask every person leaving Sam's for a donation. We arrived around 10:30am and set up shop. Tom was wearing his purple hat with the green feathers (people should give just to see that). Well, we did very good. We made $576.00 with a total of $286.00 each. So let me tell you about the $100.00. I ask this gentleman if he would like to donate some of his small change to the Leukemia Society. His reply is "I don't have and small change." I jokingly say, "Well would you like to donate any large change." He says, "How about a check?" I say, "Sure we take those too." Tom gives him a pen and the gentleman starts writing. I thought I saw a $100, but it could have been $10. He gives the check to Tom and sure enough it was $100. Yay!!! Amazing!!! We closed up shop about 5:30 and went to Chili's to count the money. This is when Tom finds out I am a Germaphobe. I ask Tom if he wants to eat first or count the money first. He says why can't we count while we eat and I respond "UMMMM Germs!!!" We counted while we waited for our food and after we ate. Maybe because I am a teacher, but you got to have clean hands. :0)

August 31st - My Dad's official birthday. Spent it with my parents, sister, nephew and his girlfriend.

September 1st - Had a training session with a new trainer to finish out my sessions. I have seen Darryl out on the gym floor for over a year. He is a goodlooking guy and doesn't look mean, but has this look like "Yeah, I'm a trainer and what?" So I was a little nervous, because I had such a great relationship with my former trainer Matt (who is going to be a Fireman, YaY!!) and it's hard switching to someone new. However, Darryl is goofy funny and made the hour enjoyable. Idon't know if I will continue with training, because of the money issue and I am saving for bigger things in my life.

Set up a fundraiser with Augie's BBQ. Wine Tasting October 3rd. More details to come.

September 2nd - Finally, made it back to midweek practice at Brack. Walked 3.5 miles with Flo Jo and Roni. Practice was not bad. It was a cool night and the company was good. The coaches, walked with us the end of the 3.5.

September 3rd - Went to Aldaco's for Happy Hour with some of the team. Met and had conversations with other members of the Nike Team. Which was really good. Usually conversations consist of
"What event are you doing?"
"Rock N Roll"
"Okay Team Let's Go!!"
"Talk to you later."
"Bye"

September 5th - First practice at HEB Basse. Nice change of scenery. Beautiful houses. Mileage for the day 14 big ones. Walked with Roni and another girl and Andy (the sweeper). Andy is a runner and he met up with us about mile 5. Us girls felt like we were really pushing to keep up a good pace, Andy looked like he was strolling. LOL Such a difference. I felt a little tension on the side of my legs, but that went away around mile 3 and my calf and hamstring felt good. Around mile 7 we stopped for a potty break at Trinity (Thank God!) It's the turning around that is hard. You just keep thinking "Seven more, ughh" I felt pretty good, but my pace started to slow down around mile 11. Mile 12 at the last water stop. My legs were saying WTF JoAnn, what do you think you are doing. For some reason Roni got a burst of energy and took off. Andy walked behind me which really pushed me to keep the pace up. Rhonda, came by in the car and said she would finish with me, but she had to pick up the signs first. Yeah Rhonda finished with me as she sat in the car. LOL She drove by screaming Woo Hoo, JO ANN!! We finally got to the intersection of Basse and the HEB. It was the longest light ever!!! We stood on the corner for about a minute looking at the team sitting in their chairs. Wishing were across the street. We waited and waited and waited, when the light finally changed my feet could barely move. I swear, if you stop for a minute, it's pretty much over. LOL Rhonda gave me a big hug, Tom gave me a high fine and Scott said congratulations. I at least know now that I can complete the half. Just 12 more miles to go. Next week our mileage is 16. Doesnt' seem possilbe, but neither did 14 when I first started this journey. I am so grateful to the coaches, staff, mentors and honored hero's who give me the motivation to keep going.

Ate with Kitty at IHOP. I had a hard time getting out of the booth. But the Spinich/Mushroom Omelet was so worth the embarressment of walking around like an old lady in public. Went to the movies with Kitty later. Same embarressment. There was an older couple (60 or 70ish) going down the stairs in the movie theater. I was right there with them. LOL

Oh yeah Rhonda and Pat keep telling me to smile more...like I haven't heard that before. LOL

Time to Play Catch Up

So the last time I logged on I completed 8 miles. Here is the latest.

July 22nd - We have been practicing at Incarnate Word University for our mid week practice. The track there is awesome, but it is extremely hot with no shade. The university has a nice trail that is shaded and I don't mind walking there. Today we did one lap thru the shaded trail and plyometrics at the track.

July 25th - Today was supposed to be the first time we do double digits. Yep, 10 miles. When I started in the morning I was feeling pretty confident that Iwould be able to complete it, but that didn't happen. I walked with one of the mentors Ashlee most of the first 5 miles. We caught up with 3 other girls at the Fire Station for a restroom break (and maybe see some of the firemen lol). Since we were feeling good, we decided to run intervals. Well somwhere around mile 7 my stomach started cramping and I felt a little light headed. I decided to call one of the coaches and have them pick me up. I didn't want to push it and end up throwing up and really feeling bad the rest of the day. I was disappointed, but I am trying to be okay with listening to my body and stopping when I need to.

July 29th - Didn't make it to practice. Not feeling well and slept.

August 1st - Missed the first practice at La Cantera, BUT it was because I had the best fundraiser the night before. David set up the Augie's Barbed Wire BBQ location, Watusi and El Verde Boys donated their time and entertained us with some great music. Frankie donated art work for a silent auction. The night was a success!!! Raised over $700. I am now only $600 away from my Nike goal. Contemplating fundraising for SA Rock N Roll. We will see!!!!

August 3rd - Made it to hills training at Eisenhower Park. Sprinted and walked a few hills. Didn't do as much as the runners. Took it a little slower, because it was my first time there. The heat is a killer.

August 5th - Walked 3 miles at Incarnate. Not too bad. Stayed in the shaded trail.

August 8th - Last one to finish BUT I completed 10 miles for the first time. YAY!!!!!!!!

8 Mile

So I had a pretty busy week. Friday was brutal. I was running around trying to pick up donations for the garage sale. Packed the truck with my parents. Tried to set up fundraisers and finalize one that I am having on the 31st at Augie's Barbwire Smoke House with music by Watusi. Then Saturday was the garage sale, so this morning when the alarm went off at 4:30am, I did not want to get up. I thought for a moment that I would skip practice and walk later. However, I am glad I went. We were set to run/walk 8 miles with the option of 4 miles. When I got to the 2 mile water stop I wasn't sure if I was going to turn around. So I asked two other girls if they were walkin 8. They replied "Yes." I told them that I would stick with them and push throught the 8. Well some where around mile 3 they turned around. I was the last person to get to mile 4 water station. It was a little odd being by myself, but it allowed me to do intervals. That actually went well. Around mile 5 Coach Jennifer walked the remaining miles with me. It was nice to get to know her better and the coaches always walk with the last walker. Around mile 6 my hand were swollen. They felt so tight. Was not sure if it was not enough or too much salt the night before. They gave me a salt packet and the swelling went down by the time I got home. Bottom line I completed 8 miles today and I am very proud of myself. I still can't believe I did that walking and jogging and I wasn't hurting. God is good.

Garage Sale

Garage Sale is today. Truck is packed and I am ready to get started. I have never sold anything at a garage sale before, so I have no idea what to charge. Aim high and get a decent price? Checked my fundraising page at $1200. Only $3000 to go. Sigh

Garage sale went well. Thank God my mom was able to help me and my friend Kitty. I don't know what I would have done without them.

Today I just saw the goodness of people. I looked at the team and they had car load and truck loads and Uhaul 's filled with items to sell and it was HOT and they were just working and selling. I was just amazed at their generosity and commitment. Some of the team members do have a personal connection to the Society and others don't, yet they are out there raising money. I cannot even express how impressed I am with the team and I still can't believe that I am a part of this. It's pretty amazing.

San Antonio=HOT

Tuesday, July 14th - Went to the park and walked/ran 2 miles. I wanted to do more, but man it was HOT. I need to go out alot a little later. I'm thinking around 7:30.

Wednesday, July 15th - Missed my session with my personal trainer at 10am, totally forgot. However, I did make our weekly Wednesday practice. This week was at Incarnate Word University. We walked a shaded trail that was about 1.5 miles and that wasn't so bad. After that we walked around the track 4 times = 1 mile. I thought I was going to die. This heat is just unbearable. Felt like we were going straight into the sun. lol After we finished the track it was back to the trail to complete another 1.5. I was happy to see those trees.

Thursday, July 16th - Went to the gym and did the elliptical for 45 minutes and some weights. I even went to the big boy side of the gym. :0)

Tomorrow I need to get ready for the big garage sale on Saturday. I need to make some $$$$$$

Monday, July 13, 2009

Sigh

Went to the gym today. Did the elliptical for 35 minutes and weights for 35. The muscles on my right leg feel a little tight. Still icing it. Plan to walk tonight at the park. Will see if I can get through it without any pain. I hope so.

Part Time Job

Gosh, I can't believe it has been since the 17th since I have logged in, but I have been extremely busy. Team in Training is like a part time job. Well I guess let me catch you up. I went to practice on Saturday, June 20th and it was basically the same thing - PAIN. So I worked out on Sunday and guess what - PAIN. I made an appointment with my doctor (actually the PA I don't think I have ever seen my doctor lol) for Tuesday, June 23rd. She told me I had shin splits. She recommended that I ice my legs and rest. She also stated that if I didn't slow down and rest, it was a possibility that I would have to quit. With that being said I followed her prescription and did nothing the rest of the week. I went to practice on the 27th and was a little afraid of whether I was going to experience the PAIN again. We were scheduled to complete 4 miles, but I held back and walked 2miles. It went by quickly and I kind of regretted not completing the 4, but I didn't want to push it. Oh yeah and there was NO PAIN. Yay!!!

June 30th - I attended Cash Bash with the rest of the team. Basically it was a fundraising clinic to give us more ideas how to raise funds. We signed up to sit outside Walmarts and Sam's club and ask for donations. (That will happen in the next few weeks.) Also signed up for the Team in Training Garage Sale (July 18th Crossroads Mall 9-2). The staff had vendors come out and talk to us about candle sales, Pampered Chef, Red Robin, etc. etc. Received some great information and I am ready to tackle fundraising.

July 1 - Practice was not so much fun. The coaches thought it would be a good idea to run sprints up a hill. Just for fun. lol. We started off at the park and walk/ran down towards Bombay Bicycle and then came back up at the intersection. When we got to the hill we were told that we were going to sprint up the hill for 20 seconds, then walk back down 5 times. On the 5th one we were to run through and do more sprints at the end of the hill, run through and then back to the park.
Ok so I did my sprint and honestly around the 3rd one it wasn't that bad. When I got to the 5th one and ran through. I thought my heart was going to explode. No seriously. I finally caught my breath and was good to go. Then one of the other walkers got sick and I stopped with her until a coach came to help her. Once coach Jennifer got there I continued my walk and asked one of the guys if there were still people down there. He said they were sprinting up the hill and "just go with him", "don't do the sprints". So I did. I really don't think I could have done the extra sprints, but I am finding out that I am doing alot of things I didn't think I could do. First and last time I will cheat. lol

July 3rd - Had a date.

July 4th - Missed practice because I enjoyed my date and stayed out a little late. Ooops

July 8th - Back to the park. It was HOT. We were all just standing there sweating. We took a different and shorter route, because of the heat. The route was a little over 2 miles and very shaded. We lapped around 4 times.

July 9th - Volunteered at the RK Health Fair for soft credit (Money towards my goal) Not alot of people, but the catered breakfast and lunch was great.

July 11th - Had our first practice at the Missions. It was a nice change from the park and simply beautiful. I loved hearing the church bells as we started on the 6 mile course. Yep, I walked (and ran a bit) 6 miles today. Seriously, I never thought I would be doing this. However, remembering why I am doing this makes it worth while. At the end of the course there were signs planted in the ground with pictures of people that we are doing this for. Some were in memory and some were in honor. Seeing their faces, reading their names, and knowing that some of them have passed, makes all the pain, sweat and time practicing and fundraising very, very, very worthwhile.

I am in bed writing this, with ice on my foot. (Toe hurts broke it a couple months ago) About to take nap since I have been up since 4:30 I feel good though, Real good.

Stretch, Stretch, Stretch

I worked out on Sunday and when I woke up on Monday...the side of my legs were killing me. They felt very sore and tender. I Googled and a "diagnosis" was shin splints. However, I don't think it is that. Perhaps this is just the "hurting phase" of physically doing something different. I put ice on my legs Monday and Tuesday, took Ibuprofen and stretched more and decided to rest.

Today, I skipped the optional team practice and walked on my own. I went to a local park and walked the track with my friend Yvonne who is training for a 5K this weekend. I was telling her I am being pretty hard on myself right now, because I feel that I should not be in pain. When I told her this was my second week, she encouraged me by saying "Give it time." So I am. I guess my biggest fear is that I will get hurt and not participate, but that is just not an option for me. So, I will stretch in the morning, before/after training, and at night. I will carry my Tiger Balm with me at all times. Take my Ibuprofen and ice/heat when necessary. I am determined.

415

I got up this morning at 4:15 in order to be at training at 5:45. My dog who was passed out on the couch even looked at me like I was crazy. lol Took a shower and put on my practice jersey, got my water belt ready, (who would ever think I would be doing this) ate some toast and was on my way. The team started off with announcements at 6:00 and took off around 6:15. The beginning of the walk was a little hard. The side of my legs were hurting, I am hoping that this will go away as I practice more. Determined not to be the last one I would run a bit then walk. However, for being so tall I would think that I would have longer strides. That was not the case, because everytime I would catch up to the group I would fall behind again. I was starting to get a little tired at about 2.5 mile, but I kept thinking about all the cancer patients and what they have to go through and I pressed on. They had us run in passed the finish line as they took pictures. Now there is proof out there how red my face was. lol

Went to my Weight Watchers meeting after training and I lost 3.4. Hoping that as I shed this weight, the training will get easier.

Can't let all those people who donated down, can't let myself down, and most importantly all those people with cancer that I am walking and fundraising for.

Faith

06/11/09
I have this friend (like family) whose husband of one year was diagnosed with stomach cancer in December. He went through chemo and surgery to remove the mass a couple of months ago. The surgery went well, the doctors said the mass was contained. Then while he was in the hospital they were told that it spread to his lymph nodes and he would start up on chemo when he regained his strength. Well, he had his round of chemo today and they found another mass. He is going for a doctors appointment where they will give him more information. I am hearing bits and pieces from different people so I hope I am understanding the information correctly.
Didn't work out today, went to an ACTS meeting.

06/12/09
I spoke to my friend today and the doctor said that they are shocked and confused as to what is happening, they think the mass is attached to the stomach muscles. Still not sure if it is Stage III or IV. Her husband is staying positive. They have amazing faith. They have had so much to deal with and yet they stay positive and faithful. I pray that God heals him, that God strengthen her as a wife and mother, and that their daughter will grow up with both her parents guiding and loving her.
Went to gym walked 2.34 miles in 45 minutes at a 3.0 speed 1.5 incline. Have my first 6am training tomorrow.

First Mid Week Practice

Today was our first mid week practice at Brackenridge and it went well. Of course as I was walking the first mile. I was wondering "Why wasn't I more athletic in high school?","Please, Lord don't let my legs cramp up!" and "Can I really do this?" I came to the conclusion that "Hell Yeah I Can!"

After we completed 1.5, I felt pretty good. I had a good stride going. I slowed down a bit for one team member who developed a blister. She wanted us to go ahead and said she would catch up, but I kept thinking of the toy soldiers from Toy Story. We don't leave any soldiers behind. LOL We ended up finishing the 3 mile in an hour. My goal is to build up to a combo run/walk.

Today was awesome. My cousin Robert and his wife Candy made a generous donation and Robert forwarded my page to his colleges at KinderMorgan. I can't log on to my page right now because of maintenance, but I know three or four of his friends donated (I wish I could list their names, but I will soon). I am just in awe of their generosity. I want to thank you for helping the Society get one step closer to finding a cure.

Being a Gonzalez Rocks!

I sent out a couple of emails to family members yesterday and I quickly got responses and donations. It really just touched my heart and made me very proud to be a Gonzalez. We don't always see each other or talk as much as we would like or probably should, but it was just amazing to know that we support each other. Thank you so much Johnny, Vicky, and Robert.

Well I had my days mixed up and we didn't train today. I instead went to a fundraising clinic. The discussed how important it is to work on our website, send out letters, set up fundraisers, and attend the activities that the LLS has set up for us. If we do all this. We will make our goals

Want to know what was really cool about tonight? Well let me tell you. As I was walking into the clinic, I recognize this guy (Daniel) that I used to work with at St. Phillips College. We caught up and I found out he will be running in San Francisco as well. What is really awesome is that we will hopefully do the extra fundraising activities together. We are all nervous about making our goals, so it will make it easier if we work together and support one another. Yeaaa Go Team!

Tomorrow is training for sure. Will hopefully post some pictures soon of us training and me in my practice jersey.

By the way, I cut my hair short. Like it alot.

Shoe Clinic

Today I went to Soler Sports for a shoe clinic. Okay... so I get there and I see all these runners with no shirts on and these really fit women in sports tanks and I am sitting in my Jeep thinking "What am I doing here?" So I call my friend Kitty to get over my "second thoughts" and I am glad I did. (Turns out that all those runners were not there for the clinic, but for a daily run.)

Well the clinic was full of new team members just like me. We were all wondering what type of shoes would be best, discussing whether we are going to be able to get up in time to make a 6am training on Saturday, and how we are going to fund raise.

The shoe clinic was led by Paul and he discussed the three types of arches and what shoes are best for the different types: flat, medium and high arch. In order to find my arch type, they observed how I walked and then had me stand on this monitor that takes your shoe size and calculates the weight distribution (I think). I fall in the mid arch and the shoes that were recommended were
Mizuno. I was not crazy about the color (white and orange), but they are beyond comfortable.

I have a mid week training tomorrow at Brackenridge Park. Will post tomorrow, if I can move. LOL

Kick Off Party

Yesterday morning was the Kick Off Party for the Fall Season at the Bright Shawl . I was a little nervous, but this summer is all about stepping out of my comfort zone. Any who - so I check in and go through several stations. I check my mailbox, take a mugshot (really), pick up my practice jersey, and then check out some of the vendors that are set up in the hallway. Finally, the presentation is about to start and I ask the only person I know (Jennifer) where my mentor's table is. I am informed that my mentor will not be present, because she was in route to a cruise (lucky her). I find my table and meet other members of my team. It is hard to believe that these new faces will soon become new friends.

The presentation began with staff members introducing the coaches, mentors and honoree members. We also met a cancer survivor who is currently training for a marathon. Her story was amazing and uplifting. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and then diagnosed in 2007 with lymphoma. I sat there with a lump in my throat listening to her experiences with chemotherapy and radiation. She is a survivor and inspiring. The whole presentation confirmed how important it is to give back and help those who are battling cancer. I cannot express how proud I am to be a part of this organization.
